Kuala Lumpur RTD Cracked Down on Truckers Dodging Inspections

Kuala Lumpur RTD found several truckers stopped along road shoulders or a petrol station and waited hours to avoid inspection.

KL RTD Found 119 Offences with Overloading Topping the List

The Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (RTD), during a special technical operation at the Gombak Enforcement Station on Feb 21, 2025, has successfully identified a tactic used by heavy vehicle drivers to avoid detection. According to officials, several drivers chose to stop along road shoulders or a petrol station near the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway and wait for hours.

Hamidi Adam, the Kuala Lumpur RTD Director, said that this tactic is often used by drivers whose trucks carry excessive loads. They choose to wait for hours simply to avoid inspections.

“This has indeed become a common practice among heavy vehicle drivers. They know that vehicles in a static and stationary condition on the road cannot be detained by the authorities,” he said, as quoted by the Bernama News Agency.

However, according to Hamidi, since the action to stop the trucks can be considered as obstructing traffic, officers were then dispatched to disperse the drivers. “As soon as they move, we can detain them and take them to the weighing station for further inspection,” he explained.

According to Hamidi, this special operation, lasting 14 days until Feb 28, was conducted to enhance road safety and address technical violations that might lead to accidents. The RTD collaborated with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) in this operation.

During the operation on Feb 21, 315 goods and public service vehicles were inspected. Based on the inspection results, action was taken against 41 commercial vehicles. Five lorries, including the Roll On-Roll Off (RORO) type, were also seized.

From a total of 119 offences detected, overloading topped the list with 56 cases. Meanwhile, there were 12 cases of no competent driving licence (CDL), 10 cases of no vocational licence, 6 technical offences, and several other cases,

The AADK also conducted urine screening tests and found three tourist bus drivers tested positive for methamphetamine, while MOTAC detected one violation involving the tourism sector.
