With the Iskandar project set to have a more impact on indus- try in the Johor region, prospects for the local trucking and container haulage industry in Johor would appear to be very promising indeed. To get an overview on the prospects for the industry in this part of Malaysia, Truck and Bus News spoke to Anthony Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Leep Thye Trading and Transport Sdn Bhd and Chairman of the Johor Lorry Operators Association.

What are the economic prospects and growth expectations for the Johor truck and transportation sectors for the coming years?
Anthony Tan
It is clear that the Iskandar project offers a great deal of opportuni- ties and the speed of development will depend on the way the Gov- ernment handles the project. However, the Johor market is very diversified and continues to grow every year. At the moment though we are just seeing the infrastructure starting to spring up and there is a long way to go. When foreign and local investor starts to ramp- up their production activity, it will directly benefit the truck and haul- age industry and the demand for trucks and haulage services will increase. I expect the increase in the transportation sector business to be inclined towards General Cargo trucks and Container trucks as more raw materials and products will be coming in and going out through the port for the export and local market.

How do you view the competitive scenario in the Johor haulage sector?
Anthony Tan
Firstly, price competition is very fierce and all transport companies will have to look at the size of their companies and their correspond- ing overheads. I would say that the costing of their own companies will affect how well they are able to compete in the market .
In addition, the efficiency of lorry utilisation and turnover to serve your customer is also crucial. By maximising your existing assets (Lorries and trailers) to service your customers, you will have a competitive advantage such as lower investment cost on lorries and lower overheads. This means speedy delivery at lower costs to maximise asset utilisation.
Human capital will also be one factor that the transport industry will be competing for, especially in the area of lorry drivers. With

很明显的是依斯干达项目,将提供极大的商机,但发展 的速度却取决于政府如何处理该项目。柔佛的市场非常 多元化,而且每年都在成长中。目前,我们只是看到公 共设施在快速地增长,仍然有很长的一段路要走。当海 外和本地投资者开始持续增加他们的生产活动,就会直 接为卡车和货柜托运带来利益,卡车和货柜托运的服务 也将增加。我预期运输的生意将倾向一般货物卡车和集 装箱卡车,因为将会有越来越多供本地市场和海外市场 用途的原料从港口运进和运出。

您对柔佛货柜托运业的竞争情况有何看法?

首先,价格竞争非常剧烈。所有的运输公司必须审视他 们的规模和相应的开销。他们公司的成本将影响他们在 市场上的竞争性。
此外,用来服务客户的罗里使用效率和周转率也是关 键。将现有的资产最大化(罗里和牵引车)来服务你的 客户,你就能拥有竞争优势,如更低的罗里投资成本和 开销。这意味着较低成本的快速交货,将资产的运用最 大化。
