3 Air filters
Air filter are another important factor when it comes to fuel savings. For die- sel engines, every litre of diesel requires 25 cubic metres of air to maximise fuel combustion efficiency. If the air entry ratio is insufficient, then the com- bustion will be incomplete. Most of the vehicle operators are also playing a guessing game when it comes to determining whether the filter is functioning effectively or has been choked. Few if any, would be willing to install devices to keep check with the air filter. The most accurate way to know whether an air filter is choked or still in good condition is to use an air filter suction indi- cator. This would minimise any guessing game and potentially cause more damage to the engine.
Servicing an air filter
Most air filters are made of paper based material. As such, they cannot with- stand water or moisture and high air pressure. One common mistake made among service centre mechanics was firstly, they would knock off the dust from the filter and then use the air to blow off the dust and dirt sticking in the filter. Many of the air compressors are not installed with water dryers or separators and therefore, the water inside these air compressors causes the air filter elements to become wet. To make the matter worse, the air pressure from these air compressors is between 8 bars (116 psi) to 10 bars (145 psi). With such a high pressure and water, the force is strong enough to damage (puncture) the air filter. And there is practically little or no protection against air dust entering the combustion chambers. When servicing an air filter, do not knock off the dust by hitting against any hard objects or surface as this will damage the sealing of the air filter. It is also important to adjust the air pressure to within 2.2 bars or 32 psi and make sure that the air is dry. But the most important part is to install an air filter indicator so that you can know exactly the condition of the air filter. This will minimise a lot of unnecessary replacements of air filters when they are still in good condition. And a good condition air filter allows the optimum amount of air required for maximum combustion of the fuel.
4 Engine piston compressions
The wear and tear of the engine internal parts depends very much on the contamination level of the engine oil. Many people have been misled into believing that engines oil must be changed at every 5,000km and now with better grade engine oil, they can be prolonged to 10,000km. But few people
