Atyre comprises of a casing and a tread. However, a casing is not only the foundation of a tyre, but also the foundation of successful tyre re- treading.
The casing is designed for a specific load capacity and performance level, as well as to endure the stress exerted upon it. High quality brands’ tyre casings for com- mercial vehicles, with proper maintenance, will retain their properties well and can be retreaded several times. When we turn a casing into a retreaded tyre, together with our maintenance knowhow, we extend the tyre’s life and lower its life cycle cost.
Growing radialisation in the truck and bus segment has widened the gap in terms of technological differences between tyre brands. Unlike in the old days, with bias tyres, where each of the manufacturers basically competed on load carrying ca- pacity as the mileage difference was not as high as it is today, radial casings de- mand much higher technology. In today’s tyre market, there are hundreds of differ- ent brands offered locally, whilst in the global tyre market, there are even more. Thus, the technology gap is even greater. One manufacturer may produce more than ten brands. Some manufacturers may be using the same casings, but for those more professional and technologi- cally advanced, manufacturers are mak- ing casings with specific applications and performance objectives in mind.
As the tyre goes through its first life, re- gardless of its performance, the casing will almost inevitably be injured, to various degrees, over this period of time. There are different types and level of casing in- juries that can be caused by lack of main- tenance or road hazards. Some of the in- juries are obvious, and can be easily seen on the casing, such as nails that can injure the casing structure. Moisture from water will make the steel rust, as today almost 100 per cent of the casings are of steel construction and hence are called radial steel tyres. If the injuries have been well
