In terms of campaigns, it should not be just JKJR or government doing road safety campaigns. We feel there is a need for individual compa- nies to sponsor safety campaigns. If every organisation does this, we will have more success. The challenge is to change the road safety culture and mind set of whole population.

What can truck and bus fleet operators do to reduce the accident rate?

The mindset of truck fleets is on profit, but the challenge is to get truck companies to realise that they’ll suffer financially if they’re not safe. Cut- ting costs is not sustainable. Fleets need to make sure that driver man- agement, journey management and vehicle management policies are followed.
There is an onus on drivers too, who need to have pride in their job. They have a critical role to play. Drivers should get reasonable pay and reasonable incentives to improve. Fleets need to realise that the costs of this can be paid for by improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced repairs. It should, however, be emphasised – the majority of drivers are not bad. If not, we will be having a lot of accidents every day.
The Professional Drivers Association can play an important role in train- ing, helping drivers upgrade their skills through the use of simulators and systematic training. Training on what to do so can help drivers react correctly in critical situations.
Health education is also important – getting the message across about not taking drugs to keep awake. Companies can now do drug screening with the help of AADK without much cost.

So finally, what would you say is you’re main message?

Our main message is that we need to get management commitment to reduce accidents. Without top management commitment nothing will move. We also need to get drivers to realise that if they take their pro- fession seriously they can save themselves from serious crashes or even death.

司机也有责任。他们必须能在他们的工作中找 到自豪感。他们扮演者关键的角色。司机必须 获得合理的待遇和激励。车队需要明白通过燃 油效率和降低修理可抵消这些成本。然而,必 须强调的是大部分的司机都不差。如果不是这 样,我们每天都会遇到很多的车祸。
专业司机公会可在培训方面扮演重要的角色, 协助司机通过模拟器和有系统的培训,提升他 们的技能。培训能够让司机知道在关键时刻如 何正确地应对。
健康教育也很重要--传达正确的信息如不应通过 吸毒来保持清醒。公司如今与反毒机构合作,在 无需支付太多费用下检测司机是否吸毒。

我们的主要信息是我们需要取得管理层的承诺 来降低交通事故。没有最高管理层的承诺,什 么都做不了。我们也要让司机了解到如果他们 认真对待自己的职业,他们就能够避免严重的 车祸和死亡,保护自身的安全。
