Wabco Holdings Inc, one of the leading global suppli- ers of technologies that enhance the safety and ef- ficiency of commercial vehicles, launched its innova- tive OptiFlow Tail solution at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2014 in Hannover, Germany.
Specially designed for trailers in Europe, the new OptiFlow Tail featured an innovative modular design of four folding panels that significantly improved air flow at the trailer’s rear. Mounted directly on the trailer’s swing doors, the OptiFlow Tail modular system allowed the doors to open fully. The system also uti- lised a fast and easy-to-use folding and unfolding mechanism. Wabco’s latest aerodynamic product would be available for new trailers and as a retrofit option for trailers already in operation.
“The launch of OptiFlow Tail demonstrates our continued tech- nology leadership to improve the efficiency of trailers for manu- facturers, fleet operators and transport companies throughout Europe,” said Nick Rens, President, Trailer Systems, Aftermar- ket and Off-Highway Division. “Proven on the test track, Op- tiFlow Tail helps to increase the fuel economy of tractor-trailer combinations by up to 3.5 per cent at highway speeds.”
OptiFlow Tail further expanded the company’s portfolio of ef- ficiency-enhancing products for tractor-trailer combinations. It built on the experience gained through Wabco’s OptiFlow Side- Wings, a unique patented flow-conductor that was specially contoured to optimise the airflow around and underneath the trailer, reducing air resistance. Made of robust yet lightweight material, OptiFlow SideWings was proven on test tracks and the road to increase fuel economy by up to 5 per cent at high- way speeds.
By installing both OptiFlow Tail and SideWings on tractor-trailer combinations, Wabco anticipated potential fuel savings by up to 7 per cent at highway speeds. Both aerodynamic OptiFlow products were part of the company’s award-winning Intelligent Trailer Program.
