cenes: MAN Munich Plant Tour

With Hartmut Mueller, Managing Direc- tor of MAN Truck & Bus (M) Sdn Bhd as our guide, we were in good hands. He showed us what was going on at each station, stopped and allowed us to ex- plore with our barrage of questions. He was like a walking, talking encyclopae- dia about the plant.
It is a huge plant with about 1,000,000 square metres of work area, including the truck assembly and cab production each occupying 41,500 square metres, and an area of 39,000 square metres for axle production.
Staffed by more than 900 employees in two shifts, the 800m truck assembly line, which runs in a straight line, pro- duces mainly heavy series trucks - the TGX series for national and internation- al long-haul transport, along with the TGS series for building site traffic and short-haul transport, as well as the TGS WW series that is tailored for the special requirements of long-haul transporta- tion outside Europe, such as the Middle and Far East, Africa and the Common- wealth of Independent States.
Mixed-model Assembly Line
“We use the mixed-model assembly line that is widely used in today’s manufactur- ing industries. This enables us to meet customers’ demand with high product variety and short lead times in a cost- efficient way. However, careful and thor- ough planning, including the sequence of steps, logistics, transportation and tim- ing, is essential for exploiting the benefits as we currently have about 70 different types in the assembly,” said Mueller.
In general, he said it took 15 to 30 hours to assemble a passenger car but for trucks, it was about 7 to 8 hours. The Munich plant assembles an average of 160 trucks per day.
He was extremely proud when he brought us to see the chassis flipping process. With the special crane system that was invented by the staff to pro- vide tandem lift involving the use of two cranes with a lifting capacity of 5 tonnes each, it can easily handle the flip of a chassis. It was really amazing to see the large and heavy chassis rolled over to an upright position in mid-air.
“We always strive to optimise our pro-
