of additional innovations, in- cluding the company’s Sili- technologies.
According to Michelin, by adding a high percentage of silica to the tread blend, the company’s Silicion technol- ogy manages to push the limits of rolling resistance to save fuel without com- promising on tyre longevity. Meanwhile, in 2018, the two Michelin engineers behind Regenion technology won the European inventor award in the industry category. With this technology, the company is able to create tread designs that self-regenerate, mile af- ter mile, thanks to 3D print- ing techniques, which give end-users the grip that they need over the service life of the tyres and in all positions. increases the robustness of the tyre. Mitchell explained that this is a technology fea- turing reinforced tread piles with a continuous steel wire of up to 400 metres long, which is wrapped around the circumference of the tyre. This technology enhances the tyre’s durability at a high- er load index or in harsher end-user.
Sustainable initiative
Michelin truck and bus tyres can be retreaded, including the X-Line Energy Z2 and X-Line Energy D2, and this forms an integral part of the product’s life-cycle. “Miche- lin’s robust casing is de- signed for multi-life. It is the most reliable and durable casing on the market, and it can be retreaded at least 3 times,” explained Mitchell. “With Recamic, Michelin’s high quality and reliable re- tread solution, the retreaded tyre is not only high in quality,

but its performance is similar to new Michelin tyres, even on drive axles. It their operating costs, but also con- tributes to the environment. Retreads save raw material and reduce the num- ber of tyres being scrapped. Carbon emissions can also be reduced by up to 25 per cent thanks to the low tread wear of the Recamic product.”
Although the Recamic factory also accepts casings of other tyre brands, only Recamic treads on Michelin cas- ings perform to the highest of levels, thanks to materials and tread patterns that are smilar to new Michelin tyres. “With other brands of casing, one will not be able to get three retreads, there- fore, Michelin truck tyres are worth every cent you pay for them. Not only that, but investing in Michelin products also enables you to do your part for the - cient, produce less emissions and are a multi-life product, due to the fact that they are retreadable.”
All this, according to Mitchell, is in line with Michelin’s goal of producing 100 per cent sustainable tyres by 2050.
“Michelin is committed to ensuring that all tyre components are ultimately sus- tainable. To achieve this, Michelin is lev- eraging its advanced technological ma- turity in high-tech materials and its own technology incubator,” he concluded.
