Policy on Vehicle Replacement Currently under Review – Transport Ministry

Commercial Vehicle Sales November

The Malaysian Ministry of Transport will introduce new policies and incentives to encourage investment for new vehicles.

Aside from Road Safety, Fuel Consumption and Maintenance Costs Also Taken into Account

The Ministry of Transport of Malaysia aims to improve road safety and is currently reviewing the policy of replacing vehicles used in logistic services, the Bernama News Agency reported on 12 August 2024.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that the ministry is aware that having so many outdated vehicles on the road poses significant risks to public safety.

“One of our main priorities is to encourage the renewal of commercial vehicles. We will introduce new policies and incentives to encourage private companies to invest in new vehicles,” said Loke during a press conference at the ESG Programme by Careplus Group.

“The maintenance costs and fuel consumption of older vehicles are also higher. Most importantly, this addresses road safety.”

“A more comprehensive policy will be introduced to guide the private sector, particularly logistics and transportation companies, in investing in new trucks. We are currently reviewing how best to implement this policy,” the minister added.

Loke, who is also a Seremban member of parliament, also emphasised the need for the Malaysian government to promote environmentally friendly vehicles by expanding its venture into the assembly of electric trucks and buses.

“We hope that investors in manufacturing plants will focus on the assembly of buses and trucks,” he said.
