Sabah is taking its first step in introducing carbon free public transportation with the recent launch of the state’s inaugural electric bus (e-bus).
Relevant Authorities Urge to Explore the Use of e-Bus
According to The Star, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said, the e-Bus service was an important move for Sabah towards green transport system. He added that Qhazanah Sabah Berhad (QSB)’s initiative to introduce this e-Bus in Kota Kinabalu was a “step in the right direction” especially given the absence of mass rapid transit in the city.
The introductory e-Bus resulted from a collaboration between QSB and Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd, one of Asia’s leading e-Bus and aluminum bus body manufacturers. A pilot run is expected to begin by December.
With a capacity of up to 66 passengers, the e-Bus also features a boarding ramp to provide easier access for the elderly and disabled on wheelchairs.
Jafry also urged the relevant authorities to explore the use of e-Buses further as the mainstay for public transport in Kota Kinabalu and elsewhere in Sabah in the future.
