Only 20 Per Cent of Sabah Residents Use Public Transport – Universiti Malaysia Sabah
Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) urged public transport providers in the state to utilize e-hailing technology to meet public demand.
As reported by Bernama, Sabah CVLB chairperson, Vivian Wong Shir Yee, said that e-hailing applications make public transport more accessible, thus increasing its usage.
“With today’s advancements in technology, we need to start transitioning to a more efficient transportation system to prevent Sabah from falling behind in this sector,” Wong said during the launching of Kumpool Sabah application on Saturday, October 26, 2024.
“We also hope for government support, such as budget allocation for upgrading the transportation system, apart from integrating the use of technology to encourage the public to use public transport,” she added.
Kumpool is an e-hailing application for van service that helps people around Kota Kinabalu access public transportation starting at RM3. The application is equipped with a variety of safety features and a user-friendly interface.
According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)’s findings, only 20 per cent of Sabah residents currently use public transport. Wong believes the newly launched application could help boost the percentage.
Wong, who is also a Sandakan MP, emphasised the commitment of the MADANI Government in driving economic growth, social well-being, and infrastructure development, especially in the state.
“Transportation is the backbone of Kota Kinabalu as it connects people to jobs and services. Therefore, an efficient transportation solution is very much needed,” she said.
She said she believed that a more efficient and upgraded transportation system would help reduce traffic congestion, decrease pollution, and provide affordable transportation options for the public.
