for the drivers. It is not easy to handle a double-deck bus as the centre of gravity and the weight is higher as compared to the normal bus, one will need to have the skill to handle the wheel.
The training is conducted on a one-to-one basis to make sure that the driver is not only able to handle the double-deck bus skillfully, but also including defensive driving and in the event of emergency and failure. Only drivers that pass the test will get a special tag to drive double-deck buses. Our operation team will do a spot check to ensure that only those drivers are allowed to operate double-deck buses.

We will not allow new drivers to drive double-deck buses, only those who are experienced and have a good driving record.
It is difficult for us to train the drivers, and I hope that the government will look into ways to providing drivers with better training. In addition, due to the shortage of bus drivers, many bus companies have also employed former lorry drivers as their drivers. There are differences between driving a lorry and a bus.

Yes. Those who handle double-deck buses will need some form of training before they can handle the bus. Just like handling a leaf spring suspension bus is different from handling an air suspension bus.

Driver training is definitely required. Drivers of any vehicle must be familiar with the vehicle no matter the size. There should also be a greater empha- sis on safety to the drivers.

Buses are built by coach builders based on plans submitted by coach build- ers and approved by RTD’s Technical Unit A final inspection is conducted by Puspakom before the bus is issued with road tax.
There are many factors that lead to an accident. Every time when accidents happen, bus drivers and operators are the ones who are being blamed. PMBOA has asked the relevant authorities for a copy of report on the actual cause of the accident whenever an accident happens, but we never re- ceived it. It is important that they give us a copy of the report so that we can learn what was the actual cause of the accident and not repeat the same mistake thereby improving safety standards.

Our double-deck bus has many safety features to ensure advanced safety for our passengers. Apart from the ABS, retarder and GPS monitored sys- tem, other safety features include upper emergency door/ladder, emergen- cy exit on the driver side, rear entrance staircase for added safety during front collision, 2 escape roof hatches, on board safety camera, etc.
According to the present law, in the case of express buses that are running more than 300km or 4 hours, bus companies will need to have 2 drivers on board. There are many factors that lead to an accident. Driver manage- ment is also one of the key factors.
