However, according to Kurokawa, customers had requested a version with a high powered engine when the prod- uct was initially researched two years ago. This, says the newly appointed MD, resulted in the preparation of a high powered light duty truck for launch.
Kurokawa was previously in charge of ASEAN markets for Isuzu and so comes into his new role with a great deal of knowledge of the Malaysian market and a conviction in the potential of the market. “We want to achieve big increases in the medium sector”, he explains. “Last year we achieved a 40% share in pick-ups, 34% of the light duty market but only 3-4% in the medium duty sector. We are not satisfied with this and wish to grow substantially in this area. We also want to increase our position in the lighter duty segment to 40% and after the new launch we aim to achieve the no. 2 position in this area”.
Overall, the aim in Malaysia is to achieve 20,000 units across all sectors in 2-3 years time. This
is high target considering current levels are around the 5,500 mark. However two years
ago we had only just launched our first CV into this market so we are making rapid step-by- step progress”.
According to Kuroka- wa, future plans may well also include an entry into the prime mover and bus chassis market.

The company will also be aiming to strengthen its aftersales and spare parts network. New parts depots will be opened in Kota Kinabalu and later in Miri to improve distribution in East Malaysia. Isuzi’s total dealer network is also planned to be increased from 33 to 35 this year with a long-term aim of 50-55 dealer partners. A t present 29 of the 33 dealers are 3S dealers but according to Kurokawa the whole network will be at 3S level by the end of the year.
