MAN Lion’s City GL CNG Named ‘Bus of the Year 2015’
The MAN Lion’s City GL CNG was chosen as ‘Bus of the Year 2015’ at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2014 in Hanover. In this year's Bus Euro Test, the jury made up of members from the European trade press was particularly impressed with the vehicle's economical and clean natural gas drives as well as its modern interior concept that has been designed for large num- bers of passengers.
“The winning vehicle showcases our many years of experience and expertise in natural gas buses. The MAN Lion’s City GL CNG shows we can already offer a well-engineered and future-orien- tated solution for the increasing demands in local public transport services," explained Heinz-Jürgen Löw, Executive Board member responsible for Sales and Marketing, during the award presenta- tion ceremony.
The Euro 6 CNG engine offered an environmentally-friendly pub- lic transport mobility solution with extremely low pollutant levels. When filled up with biogas or e-gas, the articulated bus was virtu- ally carbon neutral; offering emission levels comparable to that of fully electric vehicles. The 18.75-metre long articulated bus boasted a transport capacity of up to 142 passengers and fea- tured five double width doors – making it the only five-door bus in the market. Such innovations ensured optimal passenger flow and reduced waiting time at stops. The vehicle was also fitted with three fold-out chairs that the driver could control, meaning more standing room can be made available in the event of a large influx of passengers.
Bus models from different manufacturers had been competing against each other in the annual Bus Euro Test since 1989. The winner is chosen by a jury consisting of 19 members of the trade press from around Europe. The key criteria are innovation, cost effectiveness, suitability for use both now and in the future, as well as safety and passenger- and driver-friendliness.
