ing earlier if so required. In an emergency the vehicle can shed more speed and come to a halt some valuable metres sooner,” explained Kuchta.
Another new safety feature, he continued, was the new Lane Guard System (LGS), which use the latest camera technology. At speeds above 60km/h, the LGS monitored the vehicle's position with respect to the lane and warned the driver should he acciden- tally cross the lane markings. It would also detect autonomously when lane conditions change: a reliable warning was only possible when right-hand and left-hand lane markings were present and the lane exceeded a minimum width.
“The new LGS also takes into account the fact that many drivers, for the sake of safety, like to drive on the outside of the lane - that is, at the right edge in countries that drive on the right - and for this side of the lane gives a warning later. The system also adjusts automati- cally to whether the country drives on the left or the right,” he added.
According to Kuchta, the EBA and new LGS would become standard features in vehicle models to which mandatory equip- ment requirements applied for new registration from November onwards. This included the vast majority of MAN trucks, both MAN and Neoplan coaches and intercity buses as well as MAN coach chassis.

When asked about MAN’s aims in the Asia Pacific, he replied that the company had specific aims in this re- gion. “We have set up our regional base — MAN Truck & Bus Asia Pacific Co, Ltd in Bangkok, Thailand — which have shown our ambition and commitment in this region. MAN Truck & Bus Malaysia (MTBM) has been well-established and recognised in the field of market- ing and servicing MAN trucks and buses in Malaysia. To cater for the special needs of Hong Kong and Singa- pore, we have specially designed a double-decker bus chassis with a Gemilang body in the last 4 years. We will be delivering 800 buses to Singapore next year.”
Other than Hong Kong and Singapore, he said MAN also developed very quickly in Taiwan, Philippines and Australia.
