Forty years ago in Sweden, truck repair technicians had already started to forgo their traditional time consuming methodology of repairs, opting to invest in and use modern truck repair equip- ment. Today this modern equipment and its improved methods of repairs have spread worldwide. In Asia, Malaysia is actually one of the earliest adopter of such technology.
Today in Malaysia we have 30 workshops that had invested in state-of-the-art equipment and adopted the latest repair meth- ods. The traditional repair methodology whereby the truck must be completely dismantled pre-repair and then re-assembled post-repair, a great waste of time and utterly non-productive, to say the least, is no longer a repair pre-requisite.
In short, the repairer who employs modern truck frame repair equipment can expect:-
1. Minimum dismantling in order to start repair
2. Adequate and precise forces of straightening at the right
locations
3. A twist can be measured and repaired totally
4. Minimum usage of heat in the straightening process,
thus maintaining the structural integrity of the frame. Frames utilising high tensile steel is particularly sus- ceptible to heat
5. Much faster repair time. What used to take weeks and even months of repair time, now takes only days to complete
6. Where once 5 to 10 people crowd around to repair a truck, with modern repair equipment, only 1 or 2 techni- cians are all that is required
7. Excellent final quality of repair, guided by laser based measuring system to ensure the final repaired frame is straight and square.
Traditional repair methods call for rather skilled and experi- enced repair technicians. With modern repair equipment and methodology, less experienced technicians can handle similar repair jobs and in shorter time.
In the collision repair industry as the days go by, labour and es- pecially skilled labour is getting scarcer. For the workshops that hope to continue and prosper in their chosen field of business, investment in modern equipment and methods of repair is not an option, but a must.
