AMH and PMLOA Urge More Research and Tests on B10 Biodiesal
The Association of Malaysian Hauliers (AMH) and Pan Malaysia Lorry Owner Association (PMLOA) jointly or- ganised a press conference on 24th November last year with regard to the government’s plan to raise the current B7 bio- diesel mandate to B10 biodiesel in the transportation sector.
“We strongly urge the government to conduct more research and tests on the impact of using B10 biodiesel on heavy ve- hicles before the implementation. There were only three dia- logues between the associations and the authority, and during one of them, they presented us with test data on the usage of B20, B50 and B100 on passenger cars. One of them was that of a diesel car using B100 that was driven from Kuala Lumpur to Cameron Highlands, which they claimed to have been smooth driving. To us, this was not convincing. All of our trucks are not running 1 or 2 trips only; the average long-haul truck clocks more than 12,000km per month. Furthermore, it is important for us to prolong the engine life of our trucks to have better returns on our investment,” said PMLOA Deputy President Anthony Tan.
The main concern was the corrosive nature of the fuel. Tan explained that the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) clearly stated that currently most of their engines were designed for crude oil diesel, not palm oil diesel. “When an engine that is designed for diesel is introduced to palm oil, the oil that burns becomes acidic and would have a direct impact on the metal components including the fuel tank, fuel line and injectors. That means there will be a hike in maintenance costs and downtime, which would ultimately affect our operation and profitability.”
He quoted an example of the costly repair. “To repair an injec- tor is between RM3,000 and RM10,000; for a truck with 6 fuel injectors it could easily cost up to about RM60,000. This would definitely kill the industry. Furthermore, there might also be a need to change lubricant more often as the palm oil might di- lute the lubricant.”
