It has come to WABCO’s attention that a number of counterfeit ver- sions of WABCO’s air dryer car- tridge 432 410 222 7 have entered the Aftermarket network. These have been distributed to several distribu- tors and workshops and have caused serious problems when installed. Thus, the company has highlighted the problem to Truck & Bus News, and urge distributors and workshops to check to see if they have any among their stocks.
The risks
The counterfeit parts WABCO technical experts have examined are claimed to pose significant risks to transport safety and to vehicle performance. WABCO have identified three particularly seri- ous risks:
• Poor drying performance. Some samples of the counterfeit cartridges fail to absorb moisture from the air passing through it. This means that water will get into the reservoirs and into the brake system. In result,
 water in the brake valves will risk a sudden black-out of the brake sys- tem when it becomes frozen
 water in the brake system will risk corrosion which may cause failure of brake valves and, at least, will re- sult in the need for additional main- tenance and repair.
 the number of possible emergency brake actuations is reduced due to lower reservoir capacity.
• Desiccant powdering. The des- iccant contained in the counter- feit cartridge is of poor quality and

breaks down into a powder during use. This powder then leaks from the cartridge and contaminates oth- er elements of the braking system. This means that, in addition to the cartridge’s performance being com- promised, the whole braking system may be adversely affected.
• Weak seals. The finished structure of the counterfeit cartridge is of a poor standard and seals in par- ticular, are liable to leak and fail. Leakages will lead higher number of load cycles of the compressor, resulting in high fuel consumption and possible damage of the com- pressor. The poor robustness of the cartridge may lead to a violent burst and pose a threat to people in the environment.
How to identify the counterfeit cartridges
Counterfeit parts can be hard to identify. However, in this particular case, WAB- CO stressed that there are clear points of difference that will help you identify this particular counterfeit cartridge.
If you have purchased from another source than your official WABCO con- tact, please check any WABCO car- tridge bearing part number 432 410 222 7 held in your stock, and use the fol- lowing guidelines to ascertain whether they are WABCO original parts or coun- terfeits.
The counterfeit part is generally pro- vided in a cardboard carton, illegally branded with WABCO logo.
What you should do if you find a counterfeit cartridge
If you find counterfeit cartridges among your WABCO parts stocks WABCO ad- vise you take action quickly! In the first instance, remove the questionable car- tridges from your shelves and contact your local WABCO business partner or nearest authorized distributor. WABCO

You may then wish to contact the supplier of those parts and notify them of the discov- ery. WABCO will consider appropriate legal action if details are provided of who sold the counterfeit parts to you and when.
WABCO also recommends that, if you dis- cover that you have fitted a counterfeit part in any vehicle, you should recall that vehi- cle immediately and replace the part with a WABCO origi-nal. In addition, actuate the drain valve of all reservoirs. By doing so, you will protect your business from product liability risk and the potential damage inflict- ed on your reputation by poor quality parts.
