We are launching two new bus chassis this year - the R39 and R40. In the truck sector we also believe there is considerable potential in the MAN CLA so we will be concentrating on this sector too.

How important is the bus market to MAN in South East Asia?

In trucks we are not yet the biggest in the mar- ket but in bus chassis South East Asia is already a serious market for us. We have had success with Rapid KL and also with a tender in Singa- pore. There is considerable public transport de- velopment going on at the moment so we expect this sector to be quite exciting in the future. The Rapid KL contract was an important stepping stone for us in allowing us to move forward with taking part in major tenders.

What challenge does the increasing influx of Chi- nese brands create for companies like MAN?

Everybody is talking about this question but to be honest we don’t feel this issue so much. Some clients like continental trucks whilst others prefer the Chinese brands. The market perception is that this trend is going to impact on continen- tal truck manufacturers but we have not felt this pressure on our segment as yet.

Can we expect the new SITRAK truck from the joint venture with Sinotruk to be sold in Malay- sia? If so by whom?

Management is still looking for an optimal so- lution to this question. The new truck will fill a different segment and discussions regarding its distribution are still ongoing.

Finally, there has been significant controversy in the market recently about the suitability of high deck buses. What are your views on this?
Michal Luberadzki
To be honest, our view is that the most important safety factor is the driver. Accidents are mostly caused
by drivers. That is not to say that driv- ers are bad but we believe that the fo- cus should be on issues such as safety training and working times for drivers. The authorities are working on this and we expect changes in safety and training requirements to be imposed in due course.
