A Glance at Mercedes-Benz Buses at IAA
Urban buses, rural-service buses, touring coaches, mini- buses – Mercedes-Benz is not just represented in ev- ery segment of the bus market but it also led across the board. This dominant position was made apparent by, among other things, the implementation of the Euro VI stan- dard, where it set the pace with clean and verifiably more fuel- efficient buses.
Among the display at the Mercedes-Benz bus stand were the Mercedes-Benz itaro, boasting a new engine version in articu- lated buses; the Intouro, a specialist inter-city bus; the Tour- ismo with new safety levels and the Travego with new Active Brake Assist 3, as well as the Setra with four world premieres.
Citaro G articulated bus is now optionally available with the compact, horizontally installed OM 936 h six-cylinder in-line en- gine. The powerplant produces 260kW (354hp) from its 7.7-litre displacement while reaching a maximum torque of 1400Nm. A Power Boost System (PBS) accelerates torque build-up at lower engine speeds by briefly injecting compressed air into the intake tract, giving it pull-away characteristics on par with those of larger-sized engine. The capacity of the Citaro G is increased by up to 8 passengers with low engine weight and small installation space.
With current annual sales of more than 1000 units, the Intouro is a European best-seller in the inter-city bus sector. For the 2014 model year, the Intouro is made even more attractive with new and additional length variants. The same applies to the Euro VI-compliant powertrain, with further individualisation options. In this price-sensitive segment of the market, where value for money, high passenger capacity and continuous availability are key factors, the Intouro is said to score well as a reliable ‘workhorse’. The Intouro model range is made up of two-axle vehicles from 12.14m to 13.32m.
The additional engine variant has made Tourismo even more attractive. Previously available only for the three-axle models, the top-of-the-line OM 470 six-cylinder in-line engine is now also on offer for the two-axle high-decker. With a power output of 315kW (428hp), it delivers 2100Nm of torque.
The premium high-decker Travego is now equipped with the latest Active Brake Assist 3 feature. It also has the GPS based Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) driver assistance system. According to the company, this is the first anticipatory cruise control in the world for touring coaches to intervene in the transmission control to select the appropriate gear as well as controlling the speed, which can further reduce the already low fuel consumption.
A visit to the Setra stand at the IAA show was essential for those interested in new bus products: the bus and coach brand presented four world premieres. The bus brand's presentation in Hall 14/15 was the up-to-date, individual and broad-based range of Setra buses and coaches.
