PMLOA Raises Key Issues with Minister of Transport
Key issues of concern regarding the industry were raised with Malaysia Transport Minister Dato’ Seri Kong Cho Ha at a dialogue session held on 30th November 2011.
“We are facing a number of issues such as the shortage of drivers, trans- porting goods fees to neighboring countries, Jabatan Alam Sekitar’s (En- vironmental Department) requests for emission pollution inspections, etc. I was pleased that we were able to raise these issues directly with the Minister, ”said President of Pan-Malaysia Lorry Owners’ Association Jong Foh Jit.
Also present in the meeting were Honorary advisor of PMLOA Dato’ Tan Kim Chong, Lee Far Li, Cheng Siak Hor and Lau Sai Hoong, amongst others.
The discussion lasted for two hours, and below is the content of the memorandum that the association summited to the Transport Minister:
1) Shortage of Lorry Drivers
To solve the severe shortage of lorry drivers, PMLOA suggested the government amend the process and reduce the application fee for tak- ing up lorry licences as it is very costly at the moment. In addition, the government should also consider issuing lorry driving licence to foreign- ers, and also setting up vocational schools to train lorry drivers and to solve the severe shortage of drivers.
2) Increase of BDM
New lorries today have higher payloads and higher horse power, thus the PMLOA urges the government to increase the lorry laden weight. This will prevent lorry operators from illegal overloading in an attempt to carry more goods.
3) Increase of Transportation Charges
In 1958, the Government had set transportation charges at the rate of 25cents/Mile/Ton which is 15.6 cents/KM/Ton. PMLOA requests to have an increment of 100% to 50cents/Mile/Ton or 31.2cents/KM/Ton. The increased cost of spare parts, tyres and other accessories since then has increased the burden on lorry operators.
4) PMLOA and Puspakom Law Suit
PMLOA calls for the assistance of the Transport Minister to in- tervene in solving the court case between the association and Puspakom with an out-of-court settlement. (Puspakom has filed a suit against the association over remarks made by ex-president Er Sui See)
The PMLOA and Puspakom court case has been pending for long time. Since Puspakom is the only truck inspection centre, and lorry operators are their customers, both parties should think to the future and keep a good relationship.
5) JabatanAlamSekitar(JAS)requestsforemissioninspection
Lorries are inspected every 6 months at Puspakom, if JAS wants to
