Hiab Loader Cranes at IAA
One of the most dangerous tasks a driver can face is loading and unloading timber. It is a task that is often done in inhospitable climates, in poor conditions and no-one re- ally wants to be sat up in the wind on the operator’s seat swinging tons of timber around on the end of a crane arm. There have to be better ways to do this.
Well, Hiab have turned loading and unloading timber trucks (and other loads) into a video game – a real life video game. The driver sits in his can wearing a headset that gives him a view from the camera on the crane, roughly from the con- ventional driver’s position. He then uses a remote controller to load or unload his wagon. He stays in his cab, out of the cold and wet, out of the mud of the forest floor and out of the way of that swinging load.
Training can be done for this re- mote system using a video simula- tion, essentially a lumber loading video game using real controls. Once familiarised with the feel of the remote system, the operator can move to the cab for real and start moving loads in safety.
Technology has become embed- ded in the transport sector and
even in the crane sector manufac- turers such as Hiab are adopting digital technology and connectivity to improve maintenance and perfor- mance of their equipment. Sensors fitted to the hydraulic pumps and reservoirs and to the trucks are be- ing used to sense loads, to help the driver balance loads, and to send feedback on equipment condition.
Using this feedback Hiab can gather the big data and through analysing the data with real life performance, the company will be able to estab- lish managed maintenance and service schedules. It will be able to better train the operators to get the best out of their equipment.
This technology is being rolled out in all new equipment from Hiab. Across its range of cranes, loaders, tail lifts, rear mounted fork lifts, skip loaders, Hiab presented new tech- nology, model improvements and a commitment to the technology that will make using Hiab equipment more effective, more efficient, more environmentally friendly and more acceptable in even highly populat- ed urban environments where noise pollution is becoming an increas- ing issue. Hiab is addressing all of these demands and is preparing for future markets.
