Hiab – More Than Just Lifts
Hiab Remote Crane Operation
Hiab is, in many parts of the world, used as a generic term for the hydraulic truck mounted crane. Companies advertise their trucks as “Hiab equipped”.
The IAA showground gave the Finnish compa- ny a shop window for the transport world, and even though they were accompanied by large competitors, Hiab had put on a slick profes- sional show that demonstrated the key points of their latest equipment and drew crowds to their pavilion to see the expertly compered show of strength.
The focus of the display was the ease of con- trol of the Hiab equipment. The loader cranes in particular, whilst they looked like any other loader crane from Hiab, they have been updat- ed with the latest technology. Three new fea- tures highlight Hiab’s innovation in the loading crane sector.
Firstly, the Crane Tip Control (CTC). This mi- nimises the complexity of operating the crane – three levers operate the crane through slew, horizontal and vertical movement. This, claims HIAB, will make operation simpler and safer, and also enable more precise operation of the crane.
Secondly, comes Semi Automatic Folding (SAF). This simplifies the folding process from whatever working position the crane is in. A sin- gle lever places the crane in the exact position and folds the arms in the proper sequence. This saves time, and it minimises the risk of damage from improper procedures or positioning.

Thirdly, the new Load Stabilisation System,(LSS). As cranes become lighter through technological devel- opment, and in the chase for higher payloads, the cranes become less stable. They become prone to oscil- lation, swinging to and fro: That can also rock the truck being worked on. That slows down operations and makes precise positioning of loads difficult. LSS snses the movement and cancels it out giving a stable crane on a stable platform.
Hiab demonstrated the ease of use of the CTC by handing the controls to on- lookers, some who had never touched the controls before, and had them op- erate the crane in one simple lesson.
